Fortidsminneforeningen

Broad dissemination of knowledge

The express desire that Fortidsminneforeningen should "make these Objects known to the General Public" gave rise to an annual publication, which from its modest inception grew into a key publication for experts and others interested in cultural heritage preservation. The 164th yearbook will be published in 2010.

However, it is not through our yearbook we reach out to the general public. Our periodical Fortidsvern ("Preserving the past"), which is available to members, has a broader appeal and greater scope for addressing relevant issues. Fortidsvern is a member of the Norwegian Specialized Press Association.

A third publication is the series of pamphlets called Gode råd ("Good advice"). These pamphlets, which are intended as a resource for the owners of buildings worthy of preservation, offer advice on maintenance to safeguard the buildings.

The best, most vital transfer of knowledge takes place when people meet. At gatherings and on excursions, Society members become acquainted with cultural heritage monuments, landscape and history. Craftsmanship courses, lectures and excursions are arranged. Members often meet to work on projects together.
