History and practical information

Torpo Stave Church is usually dated to the end of the 1100s. It was dedicated to St. Margaret and is the oldest building in Hallingdal.

The stave church is of the Borgund type, with a higher central section of the nave. The chancel, which was demolished in 1880, was the same width as the nave.

Medieval decoration includes the carved door and the famous Torpo Baldachin painted with scenes of the legend of St. Margaret.
The whole church was scheduled for demolition in 1880, but Fortidsminneforeningen purchased the nave, resulting in its preservation today.
