History and practical information

Hopperstad Stave Church is of the Borgund type, and has a raised central section in both nave and chancel. The church was probably built around 1140.

Originally with a simple Romanesque appearance, it was considerably rebuilt as the Middle Ages progressed. The most interesting feature is the Gothic altar baldachin with carved heads and decorations, and the paintings in the vault portraying the childhood of Christ.

In the course of the 1880s architect Peter Blix directed the restoration of Hopperstad, free of charge and spending a considerable amount of his own money.
