Sammendrag av foredraget:
«Crofting […] helps to sustain communities. And if crofting becomes just a commodity, it becomes like any other bit of real estate.»
This statement by a crofter echoes values and concerns expressed by other participants in recent research focusing on the social values of Balmacara Estate, a National Trust for Scotland property in the Highlands of Scotland. Crofting – a system of small-scale land tenure and agriculture with a rich intangible heritage – is central to how the Trust manages the Estate. It has shaped landscape aesthetics and diverse, species rich environments in the area, as well as creating forms of communality and social sustainability. However, it also produces strong ties to the land associated with custodianship and moral ownership with significant implications for heritage management and conservation.
In this lecture, Siân Jones will explore the contemporary social values of heritage and their role in creating sustainable futures at Balmacara Estate. It is one of seven case studies in a three-year collaborative project with the National Trust for Scotland focusing on the integration of social values across the organisation. Understanding social values can support the Trust’s strategic priorities, for example around community engagement, land management, conservation and sustainability. Yet incorporating complex, intangible social values into practice also brings challenges in terms of skills, resources and organisational processes.
